Winter car cover: protect your vehicle from rain, frost, snow and hail

Cold rain, frost, snow, moisture and winter grime can be hard on a car parked outdoors. A suitable outdoor cover creates a protective barrier between the bodywork and these seasonal hazards, provided that it is fitted to a clean, dry vehicle and selected in the correct size.

At a glance: the My Roadster® outdoor cover combines three protective layers, a TPU membrane, a stated 5,000 mm waterproof rating, a soft inner surface and an adjustable retaining strap. Depending on the selected size, it is suitable for cars from 3.80 m to 5.00 m long.

Why protect a car parked outdoors in winter?

During winter, temperature changes, precipitation and outdoor deposits all take their toll. Rain leaves the bodywork wet, frost can make the morning departure more difficult, snow accumulates and the wind carries dust, leaves and light debris. After driving on salted roads, residues on the vehicle should also be rinsed away regularly: a cover does not replace washing or routine maintenance.

When a garage or solid shelter is not available, an outdoor car cover helps reduce direct exposure of the paintwork, windows and exterior components. It also helps keep the vehicle cleaner between journeys.

A three-layer outdoor cover designed for cold weather

The My Roadster® outdoor cover is designed for year-round use. Its technical construction brings together the features needed for winter parking:

  • Three protective layers help shield the bodywork from weather and everyday grime.
  • Stated 5,000 mm waterproof rating with seams protected against water ingress.
  • TPU middle membrane and breathable material that help moisture escape.
  • Soft inner surface designed to reduce friction when the bodywork is clean.
  • Slightly stretchable fabric that follows the vehicle’s lines.
  • Elasticated hems and an adjustable strap for improved hold.
  • Storage bag included for when the cover is not in use.

Rain, frost, snow and hail: what the cover can realistically do

Rain and moisture

The cover limits direct contact between rain and the bodywork. To avoid trapping moisture, fit it only to a clean and dry car. After heavy rain, allow the cover to dry before folding it or placing it in its storage bag.

Frost and snow

The cover forms a separating layer between precipitation and the vehicle, making the car easier to care for during cold weather. During heavy snowfall, remove accumulated snow regularly. If the cover has frozen onto the vehicle, do not pull it away by force; allow it to thaw before handling it.

Hail

The multi-layer structure provides additional protection and may help reduce the effect of moderate impacts. However, it cannot guarantee that no damage will occur during a severe storm or when hailstones are large. When hail is forecast, a garage or solid shelter remains the safest option. Which size should you choose?

Three sizes are currently available:

  • S: vehicles from 3.80 m to 4.20 m.
  • M: vehicles from 4.20 m to 4.50 m.
  • L: vehicles from 4.50 m to 5.00 m.

Length is not the only factor. Width, height, spoilers, rear wings and other bodywork features can affect the fit. Before ordering, consult the size guide and the compatibility guide. If you are unsure, contact My Roadster® with the make, model, year and any modifications to your vehicle.

How to fit the cover correctly in winter

  1. Clean and dry the car. Dust or grains of sand trapped between the cover and the paint can become abrasive.
  2. Remove protruding parts where necessary. A long roof aerial should be unscrewed before fitting the cover.
  3. Unfold the cover without dragging it unnecessarily. Position the front and rear first, then adjust the sides.
  4. Adjust the strap beneath the vehicle. It should hold the cover in place without creating excessive tension.
  5. Inspect the vehicle regularly. After windy, snowy or very damp weather, check the fit and allow the vehicle and cover to air when needed.

Outdoor or indoor car cover?

This page addresses one specific need: protecting a car parked outdoors in winter. For a vehicle kept in a dry garage, a Stretch™ indoor cover is generally better suited to protection from dust and light friction. If the vehicle is driven infrequently during the colder months, our guide to looking after your car and battery in winter offers complementary advice.

Honest advice: no soft textile cover can replace a closed garage during extreme weather. When used in the right conditions, however, a suitable cover can make it easier to protect a car parked outdoors.
